L1 & L2 Digital Technology: Web Design

The course will be divided into the two modules: digital information and digital media.

Course Overview

Course Overview

This course provides students with the opportunity to design and develop a website solution for a real client, such as a family member, friend, or local business. Through authentic project-based learning, ākonga investigate their client’s needs, generate and refine design concepts through feedback, and construct a fully functional, responsive website using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.

At Level 1, the focus is on establishing core digital capabilities, including understanding design principles, developing simple yet purposeful websites, and applying foundational usability and Human–Computer Interaction (HCI) concepts. At Level 2, students build on these foundations by undertaking a full end-to-end development process: conducting an inquiry, proposing a justified solution, producing a detailed design, building an interactive website, and evaluating its fitness for purpose through testing and stakeholder feedback.

The course incorporates industry-aligned digital practices such as Agile and Scrum methodologies, version control using GitHub, and the use of digital project-management tools including Trello and ClickUp. Students develop the ability to plan, design, build, iterate, and reflect on their work. Skills that directly align with the New Zealand Curriculum strands Designing and Developing Digital Outcomes and Computational Thinking.

Topics Covered

  • Researching what makes an effective, accessible, and purposeful website for a real client.

  • Applying Human–Computer Interaction (HCI) principles to improve usability.

  • Creating responsive websites that function effectively on desktop and mobile.

  • Developing proposals, sketches, mock-ups, and annotated wireframes based on stakeholder needs.

  • Using Agile development and iterative design cycles to improve outcomes.

  • Implementing websites using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript for layout and interactivity.

  • Using version control (GitHub) and digital planning tools to manage the development process.

  • Evaluating website usability and fitness for purpose through testing and client feedback.

  • Communicating, collaborating, and working safely and effectively in an online environment.
